Karan Johar made everyone sit up when he announced Takht. The mega-budget multi-starrer featuring some of the biggest contemporary Bollywood stars is the filmmaker’s first historical. The film traces the relationship between Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and his brother, Dara Shukoh. While Ranveer plays the idealistic Dara, Vicky Kaushal is the self-obsessed, tyrannical Aurangzeb. The film also stars Anil Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Kareena Kapoor Khan as Jahanara. A source confirmed to us that Alia Bhatt will be paired with Vicky Kaushal in Takht. The two have shared screen space before in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Raazi. On the other hand, Ranveer Singh will be romancing Janhvi Kapoor. Takht will be the debutante’s second film after Dhadak, which was also a Dharma venture. We are guessing that Janhvi will be Nadira Banu Begum who was a Mughal princess. The role may not be a large one as Nadira died before her husband, Dara was executed.

The film traces the rise of Aurangzeb to the Mughal throne after he eliminated his brothers and political enemies. Alia may play Dilras Banu Begum popularly known as Rabia – ud – Daurani. She was Aurangzeb’s favourite queen and bore him five children. Takht is a huge film for Karan as he is donning the director’s mantle two years after the blockbuster, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. In between, he directed a story in Lust Stories but then it was a much smaller film. The screenplay of the film is by Sumit Roy and dialogues by Hussain Haidry and Sumit Roy.
