Om

Om is a Kannada super hit Indian film released in 1995  and re-released after every year following its first release. This is in a way is the ‘father’ of all under world criminal stories, since it is the first one in any language in India, and dubbed or remaked into many of the Indian languages later. One another specilaity of the film is that it has not been premiered in television and not released in Home video.  This famous film was directed by Upendra in which Shivrajkumar And Prema were appeared in lead roles. Kannada matinee idol Rajkumar sung two of the film’s songs which were also became a prominent one in the list of evergreen songs.

The film is all about Underworld, it not only exposes  the real story, but also analyses the cause behind the rise of such criminals. The story is developing slowly by way of an interview with the gansters published in a journel  and thoroughly presents the circumstances which lead them to become so. Now it tells the story of a hardcore gangster named Satya alias Sathyamurthy (Shivakumar).  Now he is a dreadful gang leader and he rules the banglore city without a crown and scepter. He also had a memorable past as anybody, but circumstances made him like this. Now let us go to his early story.  Sathyamurthy was a poor guy from a poor family, now studying in a college. He was normally soft spoken, humble person and concentrayrd on his studies as well. But In the college there he met a girl, Madhuri (Prema) and the twist of the story starts from there. He didn’t even in his mere imagination think that things will change like this and change the whole of his life.  With out his consent the lady came into his mind and with out his knowledge he came out of him and treated him brutally.  But the other guy behind her was the brother of a gangster and he sought help from his brother to perish Satya. The cruelty of Madhuri boost up his anger towards the gangsters and he reacted vigorously to them and later become  a gang leader to counter act their deeds. The same madhuri later make out her mistake but by them the she understood that it was beyond her control to restore the situation. Can she bring back him to the olden days of love and care?  Or the enemies will follow and will make him active in his present domain without makinf him a chance of survival? The story develops to an unexpexted climax with many twists in the middle.

As mentioned earlier the film received many positive reviews and with this film Upendra became a super director.  Many movies in various Indian languages came after this film but none was cedited with the success of this film. The stunning performance of Shivaraj Kumar with prema really convulsed the theatres for a long time. Prema became No.1 heroine of Kannada  after this film. The songs in this film played a significant role in its success. The social message it conveys to all generation is that gansters are not made by spontaneous outbreaks but are created by our wrong execution of circumstances. In short it still remains as  an evergreen story told with a realistic touch.
