Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram is a 2015 Indian Tamil language film of 2015 written and directd by Don Sandy. It is his debutant attempt. Vinayak, who is the hero of the film did the production part, while K composed the Music. Besides Vinayak the film features Karunakaran, Ramesh Thilak, Vetri, Virthika Sheru and Angana Roy in lead roles.

Mahabalipuram is a touching story of Panja, an orphan by birth and his hectic life with a political goon, forgetting his friends. Panja (Vinayak) is a sculptor by profession and leads a happy life with his friends. Sathis, Othavada, Kuppan and Sammy are his close friends, all of whom reside in Mahabalipuram. He was an orphan and when he was a boy, Durai, a politician and criminal saved his life from the brim of death. Till he shows very much gratitude towards him for this and Durai misuses Panja to fuifill his malicious desires.  Sathish married his love Sangeetha (Angana) and Panja fall in love with another girl named Mahalakshmi (Virthika), a college student. They spend some joys time together and all were happy. But the fate had reserved some cruel times before them. A sex scandal video including Sangeetha with stranger stormed them and it caused the death of the new couples. The twist of the story starts from there and dazzling  love story turns to a crime story with revenge. In the run panja had to kill somebody dear to him and the rest of the story tells the last thrilling part.

Upon release the film received mixed reviews and was only an average film at the boxoffice. This was regarded as a family entertainer and it directly reveals many social phenomena that prevail in today’s society. It beautifully canvassed how the so called politicians are related with the criminals of the society and again how they used the innocent desciples to carryout their malevolent aspirations. The film is based on a revelent subject, which had made stomy situation in the life of many politicians of today. This film also provide a strong message to the society, especially to women of the society. The first part of the film has similarities with some previous film but the debantant director has succeeded to overcome this defect with the commanding performance in the second part. On performance the chemistry of Vinayak and Virthika took people’s heart by their stunning performance. Music also is found good and apt with the situation. I wish to conclude the review with a quote from the The New Indian Express as follows: “The screenplay with its twists and turns becomes more interesting as the story progresses. The episodes leading to the finale are handled impressively by the debutant director. At a crisp 111 minutes viewing time Mahabalipuram is a fairly engaging watch”.
