Kallappadam

Kallappadam (eng: Conterfeit Film) is a Tamil thriller film of 2015 wtitten and directed by J Vasivel with the debutant producer Dr. Anand Ponniraivan under his production company Iraivan Films. The film crew themselves divide the main roles among themselves and the director-J Vadivel, cinematographer Sriirama Santhosh, editor-Gaugin and Music director K (Krishna Kumar) play functionalized versions of themselves. Lakshmi Priya also plays an important role in this film.

Kallampadam is a story about how first-timers try to make a film, based on the native folk art ‘Koothu’ and the difficulties faced by them to complete it. Vadivel is a young man living with a dream project in his mind. He wanted to become famous in the film world and for that he wrote a script, which was on a rare subject and he believed that if some one help him to do the work, he will be famous. He wandered everywhere with the projcect, but could not find any body willing to do the work. Nobody even given ear to his script and he was much disappointed over this. He faced many problems and realized the fact that producing a film is not a simple task and they knew only a little about film making. He was not ready to run away from the venture, but the inevitability of money for completing their task was felt as the real burden for them. Vadivel with his friends planned a different way to complete their dream project. Though the plan looks vague they proceed with it and ‘Aadukalam’ Narein was their aim, who was once rejected their script. They decided to heist him by trapping him in a different way. The twist of the story starts from here and with the same plan there comes another lady named Lakshmipriya. Lakshmipriya knows Narein very well and narein was actually exploiting her talents and abilities in a negative way. Both of them tries to get the wealth of the shot director and the film proceeds to an unexpected thrilling climax at the end. For precise answers I request to watch the film in the theatre.

The movie Kallappadam is another story about the production of a movie witin the movie. The film received many positive reviews and the innovatism included in the movie is widely appreciated. It truelly depicts the real problems faced by the film crew in producing a film. Finance is the main problem and many are exploiting the industry by promising to help them, offering big amount. But to get it in hand they have to undergo even to some indecent routes. Everybody rejects Vadivel’s project and all these forced him to decide to loot Narein.  Lakshmi Priya herself decided to heist Narein because of  his monotonous character and it gave an interesting twist to the story. In this film they tried to promote a native folk art Koothu and to some extent they succeeded in their attempt. But some scenes which are unnecessary and create monotony are avoidable in this film. More over they skip from the main story and make it a looting story between two characters. I would like to close the review by quoting Baradwari Rangan which goes as : “Vadivel is nothing if not ambitious, but his ideas are easier to applaud than his filmmaking skills. The peace is sluggish, and the film comes to life only in the heis portions….. more fatally for the film, the leads just don’t measure up. It may be nice in a meta-ish sense to cast behind-the-scenes people, but there’s reason actors make a living. There are things like charisma, timing, dialogue delivery, reaction shots—none of these is in evidence”.
