Kaaviya Thalaivan (Eng: Epic Hero) is a comprehensive Tamil historical fiction film  of 2014.Vasanthabalan is the director as well as the writer. The producers of the film are Varun Manian and S Sashikanth. The main roles in the film are performed by Siddharth and prithviraj. Nassar and K B Sundarambal also performs important roles. The songs and background music is composed by A R Rahman. The film was  dubbed into Malayalam as Prathi Nayakan and was a success.
Thavathiru swamigal Runs a drama troupe in which gomathi and Kali performs lead roles. Both of them are the direct desciples of the Swami. Kali who was found by Swami in an early age,during a train journey in a pathetic situation. Both of them have a brotherly relationship. They joinly performed many plays and once in the absence of an artist Kali was selected for an important role and Gomathi did’t like it. Meanwhile another artist Vadivambal loves Kali but kali loves Rangamma. Once Kali was caught red handed with Rangamma  by Swami and he cursed him and prevented him from staging any programme on the stage. Before leaving the place Kali searched for Rangamma and he could see only the deadbody of pregnant Rangamma. He in disappointment ame to Swami and cursed him for Ramgamma’s death and his child. Repentent Swami pardoned him and died of bad health. Then goamthi takes charge of the troupe and made Kali out. 
                      As time went on Gomathi and Vadivambal became famous as an actor and a singer respectively. Now they are in Madurai in the company of Mansoor Ali Khan who produces plays. Kali unexpectedly get a chance to play gomathi’s role and he became famous as ‘Rajapart’ and it makes Gomathi jealous again. Gomathi trapped Kali and send to jail. Vadivambal not in good terms with gomathi left the troop and joined with Kali and his troupe playing stories of freedom movement gained popularity. She again expresses her love towards Kali and this time Kali accepts it. From riches gomathi fallen down to a poor and Kali help him and made him a member of his team. But treachery of gomathi continued and he killed Kali.Vadivu was pregnant. The story continous  and end with a super climax. What is that unexpected climax? Will Gomathi take care of the Kali’s son. The movie answeres all these questions.
  The film got positive reviews more and it is regarded as a classical art of Vasanthabalan. Actually the film takes us to the beginning of the 20th century and this gargantuan story has knobed well with each character. The performance of each, especially Siddharth and prithviraj were the most praised plus point and both of them performed competitively.  A R Rahman gave full support to the movie with his glorious music. At Behindwoods, Dilani Rabindran wrote "Kaaviyathalaivan deserves to be seen widely and appreciated internationally, not just because it is richly made – but because it is differently made, and the results are reverentially entertaining. It is truly sad that we don’t see more ambitious films like this in South Indian cinema, but perhaps that is what makes it such a gem. I highly suggest you do not miss seeing this rare commodity on the big screen."
