Ek Phaali Rodh tells the story of a social seientist who tries to measure how much humanity is left in society by some mock real life experience. Dr. Somshekar Roy , is a social seientist and Awagato and Anwesha are his assistance. He entrusted them to create mock crisis on streets of Kolkota and find the effects of this crisis on them. He believed that he could study the bystander effect from them. Anwesha is a post graguate in sociology and from a well do family. On hearing the experiment she was delighted to join with Dr. somshekar. She is engaged to a celebrity singer Joy. The otherone was a journalist and not having a decent job. Swagata loves Rupa whose mother was suffering from Cancer. For Rupa her mother was the only earning member of her family and for that she was very much disappointed. Among these another person, Prathim Guha came to their group attracted by the attempt and he has his aims to attain. He was a blind writer of love stories though emotional and romantic he thought that he would get a decent subject for his story by this experiment. They just started their experiment and when it stated to give results an unexpected tragedy alters the chemistry among them and one of them suddenly went missing and all were in confussion and couldn’t decide whether it is the part of the game or not. More over Anwesha were attracted to Prathim Guha and that made the scene very complex. So the twist of the story starts from there and goes to an unexpected climax by leaving a question that whether Dr. Somshekar and his friends were the subjects of their own experiments.
The film received many positive reviews and the attempt made by the director to make such a social film was praised in a large scale. The performance of Anwesha and Pratim deserves special applause and they acted their role of love, admiration, attraction and friendship with Swagata, everywhere worked well. The main point of disagreement is that the film couldn’t explain all these relations and complexities in them within this short time of the film. The audience were cofused about the changing situations and didn’t get sufficient time to go with the team. But by the last hours the director had succeeded to tie up a relation with all sensitive matters in a satisfactory manner. In short it is a good attempt and the performance, music, screenplay and social message it conveys, all make it in the list of must watch movie in 2014.
