Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is a mystery thriller bollywood film of 2015 directed by Dibakar Banerjee. Dibakar Banerjee himself did the direction in association with Aditya Chopra. The film features Sushant singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in key roles. The other characters appears in the film are meiyang Chang, Neera Kabi, Arindol Bagchi, mark Bennington and Divya Menon.

The film is based on the Bengali fictional story written by sharadinu Bandyopadhyay, in which he portrays the detective Byomkesh Baskshi, which later becomes a famous detective character in all over Bengal, like Sherlock Holmes by sir Arthur Conan Doyle became famous all over the world. This story of Byomkesh Bakshi (performed by Sushant singh Rajput) is about a murder and investigation about an opium importer gang from China. The story took place in Calcutta city before Independence. Byomkesh Bakshy is a student and Ajit (Anand Tiwari) is his classmate. Once Ajith approached Byomkesh and informed him that his father, Bhuvan Banerjee, who was working as a chemist was missing for the last two months and no information about him till now. At first, Byomkesh didn’t agree to investigate the missing but later accepted his request and started investigation. Byomkesh’s girl friend Leela deserted him and married a chemist in the same college. Though it hurt him he went on with the investigation. With Ajith he first visited Bhuvan’s house but no vital clues were obtained. Later he went to Bhuvan’s lodging room and met the residents there. There he met Dr. Guha, Ashwini Babu and kanal Deo, a lincenced opium merchant. By studying the circumsatances he came to the conclusion that Bhuvan might have killed by somebody. Byomkesh went to the factory where Bhuvan worked and found an actress, who was  a friend of the owner, Gajanan sikdar. During from the conversation and later incidents Byomkesh get into the conclusion that the owner is being blackmailed by someone and he cocluded that it may be Bhuvan himself. But further probe revealed that Gajanan is only a shadow of the real picture and somebody is playing in the back in this case. Soon Gajanan was killed by someone. Gajanan had a nephew, who was a political rival to him. He helped Byomkesh very much and he alo went missing. Later he suspects Dr. Guha with regards to this case. In the first phase he got some help from Dr. Guha and later Byomkesh understood that Dr. Guha is retreating deliberately from the case thinking that his crookedness will be find out by Byomkesh. But he found out that the case is not so simple as he considered bet it has a strong relation with the underworld kings, who deal with drugs. Byomkesh reached the conclusion that Bhuvan might have invented some secret formula in which opium can be used as an intoxicating drugs and that might have lead to his elimination. China as well as Japan is interested in Calcutta. They are planning to coquer Calcutta to make it the drug capital of the world. So Byomkesh started his battle against the gangsters and he finds some of his friends among the gangsters among them he finds the king of the gang leaders. Who was the king of the gangs whom he met earlier? Could he defeat the culprits with out shedding much blood? The climax of the story with an unexpected twist waits for you with the answers, so watch the movie.

The film received many positive reviews from critics and it depicts a true picture of Calcutta city in the pre-independent era. Calcutta was a place of anti-social elements and a major centre of drug business by china. Japan also had a plan to invade Calcutta to flourish their business. The film tries to demolish a good name that calcatta had in the past and locate on its dark side where there is trachery and anarchism rules. This is a film where ladies and music have no importance but even then with performance Divya Menon took a place in the heart of the people. Sushant Sigh Rajput carries the film on his shoulders and the director used his talents in an amazing way. I wish to conclude the film with a quote from Hindustan times and goes as : “ the action in the film starts taking place from  a distance and the director slowly involves the audience into it. Pre-independence Calcutta serves as the backdrop in the opening scenes, but it soon turns into a character. The attention to detail is obvious in almost every frame of the film”.
