FlashBack: From Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh Khan To Rajinikanth: Decoding The Journey Of ROBOT

8 years after the release of Robot, Shankar is coming up with the sequel of the film titled 2.0 and the casting coup around that film is as exciting as the first part.

Back in 2010, Robot became the one of the biggest hit of Indian Cinema. The movie went on to set several records not just in India, but also across the globe. The Shankar Directorial, starring Rajinikanth in lead opened the gates for science fiction films in India. However, very few know that the film was in making for over 10 years.

Shankar had initially planned to make Robot in 1999 with Kamal Haasan and Preity Zinta in lead. Haasan and Zinta had also shot for a few sequences of the film and allotted their dates to Shankar. However, the director, who was already shooting for Nayak, decided to postpone the shooting schedule of Robot. When Shankar decided to resume shooting for the film, Kamal Haasan got busy with other commitments and eventually, the film was put on the back burner. The duo later teamed up for Indian, which proved to be a huge blockbuster.

After Sivaji: The Boss, Shankar decided to revisit the film, however this time around with a different star-cast. The director reworked on the script based on the modern-day sensibilities and approached Shah Rukh Khan to play the lead. The superstar was impressed by the script and even started working on the pre-production with Shankar and the VFX team. Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan even gave a lot of his inputs to Shankar which the director incorporated in the script. Apart from Shah Rukh Khan, even Priyanka Chopra was roped in to play the female lead in the film.

However, the things fell apart in the pre-production stage itself. Shankar and Shah Rukh Khan decided to team up for some other film in the future. The reason for the minor conflict was apparently the difference in working style of the two people. While Shankar wanted to shoot the film in different schedules spanning over one and a half years, Shah Rukh Khan wanted to wrap up the film in a shorter span and allot more time to the post-production.

Director Shankar didn’t give up on his dream to make the science fiction thriller and approached Rajinikanth with the script and the superstar instantly agreed to be a part of the film. After that, Shankar approached Amitabh Bachchan to play the negative lead in the film, however the actor despite loving the script turned down the offer as he wasn’t too keen to take up the negative character, which finally landed with Danny Denzongpa. Aishwarya Rai was eventually roped in to play the female lead in the film.

As expected, the director served the audience with a never seen before cinematic experience. The VFX team of Jurassic Park worked with Shankar on the visual effects of Robot. 8 years after the release of Robot, Shankar is coming up with the sequel of the film titled 2.0 and the casting coup around that film is as exciting as the first part. Stay tuned for the second part of this article.
