Dulquer Salmaan’s Bollywood Plans. Can the Malayalam Star Crack it after The Failure of The Zoya Factor?
After two box office flops in Bollywood, Dulquer Salmaan may not step out of Tollywood where he has a huge fan base
Can Dulquer Salmaan crack it in Bollywood again? That is the question many of his die hard fans are asking after the tepid response to last week’s release The Zoya Factor. Like many of his peers from South Indian cinema, Dulquer Salman, in spite of all the positive press he received in the Mumbai press this month, has not made a mark in mainstream Bollywood.
For all his talent and charm, the Malayali actor has been rejected by Hindi audiences. The Zoya Factor where he spoke Hindi without an accent and where he plays the captain of the Indian cricket team modeled on Virat Kohli, has bombed at the box-office.
This is Dulquer’s second flop in Hindi cinema after Karwaan in 2018 which was road movie with Irfran Khan. For The Zoya Factor, Dulquer got a lot of publicity and media exposure in Mumbai. In fact, Sonam Kapoor and her sister Rhea were planning to cast him in their next production The Battle Of Bittora after Fawad Khan exited the project. But now, after The Zoya Factor it seems improbable.
He is well ensconced in Kerala and it remains to be seen if he will branch into Bollywood again. But perhaps Dulquer doesn’t have too many plans to conquered Hindi cinema either. During the release of Karwaan Dulquer had made his priorities very clear. “In Malayalam which is my home ground I’ve never sought to do conventional ‘hero’ roles. I wouldn’t be comfortable doing that in Hindi either. The spoken language is secondary to me. What the film says and how comfortable I am saying it is more important.”
Dulquer, however, has no shortage of fans. Despite the box office numbers, he has endeared himself to critics and the ladies. He already has a huge fan base down south where he has impressed one and all with his wonderful performances and on-screen charisma.
