Did Malaika Arora recommend Deepika Padukone for Om Shanti Om?
Deepika Padukone has come a long way in the film Industry; she will complete a decade in the industry this year. Deepika debuted with Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om in 2007 and has since then achieved global recognition, fame and stupendous success. Deepika also debuted in Hollywood with Vin Diesel earlier this year. She is one of the highest paid actresses in Bollywood and is paid more than the male leads in her next, Padmavati.
Deepika’s success story is not only inspirational but also quite unique. She started out as a model and worked in a music video before she got her big break with superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Ace Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks was instrumental in recommending Deepika for Om Shanti Om. Deepika was the show opener of Wendell’s show Isadora. He had stated, “I showed a collection called Isadora at Lakmé Fashion Week…it was a game changer for Deepika. Director Farah Khan asked my friend Malaika to suggest a new model to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan for her new film. Om Shanti Om did not have a working title at the time. I suggested Deepika who was barely two years into modelling. I made her open the show and told Malaika that the first girl I was sending out was the one I recommend. Malaika liked her, conveyed the same to Farah and a screen test was done. The rest is history.”
On the work front, Deepika will be playing the role of Queen Padmavati in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next film. She has also signed a film with Irrfan Khan that will go on floors next year.
